| You Me & IT >> General |
Hello and welcome to my brand new blog ‘You, Me & IT’. I’ve wanted to start a computer and IT blog for some time but couldn’t decide on a name. I’ve thought of a few names and other friends have suggested some as well. I have decided upon ‘You, Me & IT’ because it sums up what the purpose of the blog very simply. The blog is for You the reader, it gives Me the author a chance to pass on information, knowledge and experience about IT and computing which I have accumulated over 20 years.
In this blog I plan to provide information, tips, tricks, tutorials as well as software and website recommendations. I’ll present things so that they are easy to understand and follow. I’ll have material for beginners, intermediate and advanced computer users. Hopefully it won’t just be me; I invite and encourage your comments, suggestions and even blog posts/articles if you want to write something.
Let me introduce myself, my name is Brad Ireland and I have extensive experience working in a high volume IT Help/Service Desk/Customer Service Centre environments providing technical information, guidance, support and service via Phone, Email and in Person for over 15 years and more people than I can remember/count. I was first bitten by the computer bug back in 1990 while working as an office clerical trainee for the federal government department of employment, education and training. After one of my supervisors showed me how to bypass the menu system and get to something called a DOS prompt, and then give commands to the computer to do stuff I was hooked. It wasn’t long before I bought my own computer and started to learn how to use it. I learnt quickly and became good at using it to do all sorts of things. Eventually I got a chance to work in the IT section for 3 months but ended up working there for years. Read the About Brad section for further details of how I got started, my skills, experience and knowledge, training and certifications and networks and associations I'm part of.
My technical and customer service skills and abilities were praised by many of the people I supported verbally, in writing and on three occasions being presented with customer service awards. I was able to demystify the world of computers for people by I was able to demystify the world of computers for people by listening to them carefully when they asked a question, reporting a problem or making a request. I gathered any further information and problem solved by asking questions and again listening. I then was able to provide an answer solution by explaining something or asking for something to be done in a way that could be understood by the person I was assisting or actioning a request by taking action on their behalf. I did all of this in a friendly, patient, good humoured and non-threating manner. I really enjoyed the interaction between me the ‘help desk guy’ and the person, I got much satisfaction from helping and hearing the relief in someone’s voice after I could answer a question, solve a problem or action a request. In fact miss it now that I have changed my role from support to more of a service delivery/management focus. This is another reason why I wanted to start this blog and website so that I could continue to help.
I plan to start You, Me & IT by covering some of the very basics of computer hardware and software and then move onto various other topics. If you have suggestions about what I should cover please comment and let me know. I hope you like the journey, hope you find it interesting, informative and maybe entertaining.
